p7/7- March 8, 1987 L. / Planning Department Orange County Courthouse Margaret Lane Hillsborough, NC 27278 To the Members of the Board: A letter to the Editor of the Chapel Hill Newspaper from Mary Ellen Priestly appeared in today's edition concerning the public hearing scheduled for this Tuesday evening. Because I will be unable to attend the hearing I would like to submit these comments to you about the development of our community, including rural space in Orange County which would be affected by the proposed amendment to the Joint Planning Area Land Use Plan. Ms. Priestly's letter is the first news I have encountered about this important issue. My father and I both grew up and live in Chapel Hill . My paternal grandfather, who was a member of the Sierra Club, imparted to my father, and the two of them to me, a deep appreciation of the natural environment and its inhabitants -- be these animal , vegetable, or mineral . This is my inheritance -- a valuing of nature, and in particular, of its expression in Chapel Hill , Orange County and North Carolina. To see our space with the varied life it supports squandered to promote short-sighted interests really hurts. When we begin by disregarding the integrity of this rural area we initiate a process which can lead to its disintegration altogether: "development." Ms. Priestly put it very well when she wrote, "We should all care about the trusteeship of our land; we won't get any more." Actually, the land constitutes our collective inheritance. This is why I request that the Board turn down the proposed amendment to the Joint Planning Area Land Use Jlan which would compromise Orange County's rural area. Thank you for your consideration.
