191
RURAL BUFFER IMPLEMENTATION MEASURE
Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance
Descrietion
Flood hazard areas have been identified in Orange
County. The Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance restricts or
prohibits land uses in these flood hazard areas. In doing so
it prevents activity that would result in more severe flood
hazards and reduces damage caused by floods by requiring Land
uses in the flood hazard area to be protected against flood
damage. It does this by prohibiting activity within an
identified floodway from being developed in a way that would
increase the elevation of a flood. This prevents floods from
being made more severe. It reduces damage by requiring
structures to be floodproof or built above the elevation of
the projected flood. •
Aggl2cgion
Flood prone areas have been identified along every major
stream in the rural buffer. These flood prone areas are
shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps prepared by the Federal
Insurance Administration. The Flood Damage Prevention
Ordinance is applied to these areas. Additionally, stream
buffer requirements in protected watersheds are predicated on
identified flood prone areas.
References
Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, Orange County.
