169 <br /> RURAL BUFFER IMPLEMENTATION MEASURE <br /> Public Interest District (PID) <br /> Descrietion <br /> The Public Interest District (PID) is a zoning classi- <br /> fication in the Orange County Zoning Ordinance. The purpose <br /> of the district is to preserve and protect from development <br /> certain public land and private educational lands that are <br /> deemed environmentally sensitive and of major scientific <br /> research significance. <br /> • <br /> ' To accomplish this, use of Land zoned PID is signifi- <br /> cantly restricted. Land zoned PID may be used for the <br /> location of • accessory uses to residential structures, botani- <br /> cal gardens and arboretums, parks, non-profit research Lands <br /> and installations, governmental facilities and office build- <br /> ings, and water and sanitary sewer pumping'st ations. After <br /> issuance of a Class A Special Use Permit by -the Orange -County <br /> Board of Commissioners, land zoned PID may be used for <br /> utility stations such as switching stations, telephone <br /> exchanges, and water and sewer treatment plants. <br /> Development in the PID is limited to Lots Larger than <br /> 500,000 square feet . The maximum permitted floor area of any <br /> such development is 1 .25% of the lot area. <br /> ARRiication <br /> The PID is to be applied to the following areas in <br /> Orange County: all Duke Forest lands, the Eno River State <br /> Park, all University of North Carolina lands, and all other <br /> public or private educational lands deemed to be environ- <br /> mentally sensitive and of major scientific or research <br /> significance.
