POLICY (1) Duke Forest tracts will not be developed over the period 1980-2000. (1) p. 3.12-10, (2) p. 53. (2) The existing open space system in Chapel Hill Township, which includes the Duke Forest Lands, the UNC buffer around University Lake, the Morgan Creek Wildlife area. and existing agricultural and forest land, should be protected from intrusion by incompatible land uses. (1) p. 3.12-15. (2) p. 52. GOAL (1) Maximum availability and use of recreational land. facilities. and open space land to serve citizens at both the County-wide and community level. (1) p. 3.5-10. (2) The rural residential and agricultural character of the Township outside the Towns and adjacent transition areas should be maintained. (1) p. 3.12-5. (2) p. 52. (3) Rural lands currently existing between the Chapel Hill- Carrboro urban area and Hillsborough (rural buffer) should be preserved. (2) p. 52. OBJECTIVE None EROPQSAL (1) PUBLIC INTEREST AREAS. The Duke Forest tracts and the buffer area around University Lake are unique because they are. in effect. being held as open space and used for research and recreational purposes by designation as Public Interest Districts. The Duke Forest lands, as a group. form a band across the north central part of the Township generally separating the rural area from the Transition area. Thus. the integrity of the Duke Forest tracts are an important aspect of the developing land pattern in the Township. (1) p. 3.12-11.
