111
TRANSMISSION LINES
I , QUALITATIVE DATA
Transmission Lines for electricity and natural gas cross
the rural buffer .
II . QUANTITATIVE DATA
High voltage electrical transmission lines and sub-
stations owned by Duke Power Company and Piedmont Electric
Membership Corporation are located in the rural buffer . The
locations of these facilities are shown on the attached map.
A high pressure natural gas transmission line owned by
Public Service Company is also located in the rural buffer.
Its location is also shown on the attached map . A second
natural gas transmission line is located in the right-of-way
of US 15-501 through Orange County. It does not actually lie
within the rural buffer. It does parallel the rural buffer
boundary in southeast Orange County.
Piedmont plans to extend its transmission north to the
Eno substation. This extension will be parallel to Duke
Power Company ' s 44000 kw line which is the western most of
the two north-south Duke Power transmission lines .
Utility transmission lines are located in rights-of-
way. The width of the rights-of-way varies with the type and
age of the transmission line. New electrical transmission
lines are located on 100 ' or 150 ' wide rights-of-way. Older
electrical transmission lines are located on narrower rights-
of-way. The Duke Power Company transmission lines serving
the Eubanks substation are an example of this . The right-of-
way for those lines is 68' wide.
The Public Service Company natural gas line that runs
roughly east-west through Orange County is located in a 50 '
wide right-of-way. The width of the rights- of-way for the
transmission lines located in the rural buffer are shown on
the attached map.
III . IMPACT/IMPLICATIONS
While a necessary part of the provision of electrical
and natural gas service, transmission lines consume a signi-
ficant amount of land . Transmission line rights-of-way
cannot be included ag. part of the buildable portion of a
building lot . As such; subdivisions must be designed around
the rights-of-way. ra" ` ..
IV. REFERENCES
1 . Duke Power Company
2 . Piedmont. Electric Membership Company
3 .
