109
RAILROADS
I. QUALITATIVE DATA
A spur of the Southern Railroad crosses the northern
portion of the rural buffer.
II. QUANTJTATIVE DATA
A single track extends from the mainline of the Southern
Railroad near 1-85 south to Carrboro. All crossings are at
grade. Warning signals have been installed at busy crossings
such as NC 86.
Traffic volumes on this track are described by N.C.
Department of Transportation as less than one per day. It
•
appears that traffic volumes are more accurately described as
one train per week. The only regular customer of rail
service on this track is the UNC Power Plant. One coal train
per week provides fuel to the Power Plant. Other customers
make incidental use of rail service.
III. ISSUES/IMPLICATIONS.
UNC is up-grading the Power Plant so the rail service
for coal deliveries will be needed for the forseeable
future. As automobile traffic increases at rail crossing.
more warning signals will be needed.
IV. REFERENCES
1. North Carolina Department of Transportation. Traffic
Engineering Branch
2. Transportation Improvement Program for North Carolina
