QUALITATIVE DATA <br /> The North Carolina Department of Transportation is <br /> solely responsible for the development, maintenance. and <br /> improvement of highways in the rural buffer. <br /> Since Orange County does not maintain a street system. <br /> streets serving individual developments are provided, owned. <br /> and maintained by individuals. <br /> II. QUANTITATZYE DATA <br /> The Thoroughfare Plan for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro <br /> portion of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-Durham urbanized area <br /> contains highway projects in and near the rural buffer. The <br /> proposed Thoroughfare Plan for Hillsborough also contains <br /> highway projects in or near the rural buffer. The Transpor- <br /> tation Improvements Program for North Carolina contains <br /> additional highway projects. Projects that impact the rural <br /> buffer are: <br /> 1. Widen NC 86 - highest priority for widening will be <br /> between 1-40 and the present 5 lane section that <br /> ends at Homestead Road; the balance of NC 86 <br /> between I-40 and 1-85 will be widened as the need <br /> arises <br /> 2. Widen Old 86 - widen north of 1-40 to Hillsborough. <br /> purchase of additional right - of-way will precede <br /> widening <br /> 3. Davis Road (SR 1129) - extend eastward from Old 86 <br /> to NC 86. extend westward from Orange Grove Road <br /> (SR 1006) to Borland Road (SR 1126) <br /> 4. Crossroad Church Cemetery Road (SR 2231) - extend <br /> eastward from dead end to Turner Road (SR 1130) <br /> 5. Weaver Dairy Road Extension - extend Weaver Dairy <br /> Road westward from NC 86 to Homestead Road (SR <br /> 1777) <br /> 6. Homestead Road (SR 1777) - relocate to south of <br /> Calvander and extend from Hillsborough Road (SR <br /> 1009) westward to Hatch Road (SR 1944) <br /> 7. Laurel Hill Parkway - construct an outer by-pass <br /> south of Chapel Hill and Carrboro by extending old <br /> Fayetteville Road (SR 1937) from Jones Ferry Road <br /> (SR 1942) to NC 54 at the Durham County line <br /> Since Orange County does not maintain a street system. <br /> streets serving individual developments are provided. owned, <br /> and maintained by individuals. <br />
