101
POLICE, FIRE, RESCUE SERVICE
I. QUALITATIVE DATE
Police protection is provided by the Orange County
Sheriff' s Department. Fire protection is provided by seven
volunteer fire departments: Hillsborough. Eno. Orange Grove,
New Hope. White Cross (Eli Whitney) . South Orange, and North
Chatham. Rescue service is provided by Orange County and
South Orange Rescue Squads. Emergency services are dis-
patched through a central dispatch center. Service requests
for all emergency services are made by dialing "911".
II. QUANTITATIVE DATA
The Orange County Sheriff' s Department serves the entire
unincorporated portion of Orange County. Its main office is
in Hillsborough and a satellite office has- been established
in Chapel Hill. There are five patrol districts in the
County. The rural buffer lies predominantly in one patrol
district. Portions along the northern and western edges of
the buffer are in other districts. A patrol car is assigned
to each district. From one to three additional patrol cars
will be assigned to supplement the regular patrol cars in the
evenings and on weekends.
• The service areas of the seven volunteer fire depart-
ments are located in the rural buffer. Only two fire sta-
tions are physically located in the rural buffer area. These
are the two New Hope Fire District stations located on NC 86
and Whitfield Road. Other fire stations are located outside
the rural buffer. One, the North Chatham Fire District
station. is located in Chatham.
with the exception of South Orange where service is
provided by the Town of Carrboro. each department is respon-
sible for its own district. A unit will not leave its
district except at the request of another district. All
units are dispatched from the central emergency center.
The two rescue squads serve nights and weekends. A paid
service provides for weekdays. There are two rescue units in
each squad. One Orange County Rescue unit is stationed in
Hillsborough on South Churton. The second unit is stationed
in Efland. The South Orange Rescue Squad stations one unit
at Roberson Street in Carrboro and the other at Fire Station
#3 on Elliott Drive in Chapel Hill.
There is no designated service area for either squad.
When both units in one squad are busy. a unit from the other
squad will go to Blackwood Station on NC 86 to take up a
standby service position. All units are dispatched from the
central emergency center.
