89
_ VEGETATIVE TYPES
I. DESCRIPTIVE pATA
Vegetative cover was one of the three environmental
parameters addressed in the preparation of the ,joint Plannina
Ladd LIZA Plan.- Three broadly defined vegetative classes
(wetlands, forest. and cleared areas) were mapped and used in
conjunction with topography and soil stability to determine
the development potential of land in the Joint Planning Area.
In mapping vegetative cover. two primary sources were used.
These were 1982 infrared aerial photos obtained from the Soil
Conservation Service and the $oil survey DI Orange County
which was used to determine wetlands, i.e. . alluvial soils.
II. QUANTITATIVE DAP
There are no substantive changes to report in the
vegetative make up of the Rural Buffer. About 30 acres of
the Blackwood Division of Duke Forest (in the vicinity of Old
N.C. 86 and Eubanks Road) was logged this past year. This
was part of the management program for Duke Forest and
represents less than 1% of the total Duke Forest acreage in
the Rural Buffer. The area is scheduled for re-forestation
• in February, 1987.
III. ISSUES 8ND ;MpLICATIONS,
The various Duke Forest tracts comprise almost 10% of
the Rural Buffer and are the largest unbroken areas of forest
cover in the area. The fact that they are in single owner-
ship would seem to offer advantages in preserving/protecting
the forest. Judson Edeburn. Duke Forest Manager. said there
are no current plans for any major changes in Duke Forest.
Be did emphasize. however, the study of all Duke University
lands currently being conducted by the Urban Land Institute
and the possibility that recommendations for uses other than
education. research. and recreation may be forthcoming.
IV. BEFEREHCEa
1. Joint Planning. land Use Plan October 1986 .
2. Phone call to Judson Edeburn. Duke Forest Manager.
