No comments have been <br /> received by the Clerk to the Commissioners since the January <br /> 20, 1987 Commissioners meeting concerning the charge. <br /> NEED: Horace Williams Airport is located in the northern portion of <br /> Chapel Hill on N. C. Highway 86. The airport has a basic and <br /> general utility classification, serving general aviation needs <br /> as well as the UNC Medical School, the University of North <br /> Carolina, the N. C. Memorial Hospital and local businesses. <br /> Residential development over the past two decades, including <br /> the construction of two schools, Guy B. Phillips Junior High <br /> and Estes Hill Elementary, has encroached upon the airport. <br /> Two other schools--Seawell Elementary and Chapel Hill High <br /> School--are also nearby. Residents and school officials have <br /> complained about noise associated with airport operations and <br /> the threat to the safety of student. <br /> The Chair of the Board of Commissioners desires to appoint a <br /> Task Force for the purpose of finding another site for the <br /> airport. Advertisements have been placed in newspapers to <br /> attract persons interested in serving on the Task Force. The <br /> Task Force would include UNC and N. C. Memorial Hospital <br /> representatives as well as Town and County residents and offi- <br /> cials. <br /> IMPACT: Approval of a charge to the Task Force would enable the group <br /> to focus immediately on issues related to relocating Horace <br /> Williams Airport and reduce the length of time required to <br /> produce a report to the Board of Commissioners. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S) : <br /> Approve the charge as amended at the January 20, 1987 meeting. <br />
