•
financial benefit of over $389,000 in 1979 as a result of the presence
of the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.
Though PDK serves as a regional transportation facility, it is an a
am-
portant source of jobs, taxes and transportation to DeKalb County. Approxi-
mately 46.2 percent, or 357 of those employed at PDK, are DeKalb residents
with an annual payroll in excess of $5 million. Further, 48 percent of the
airplanes based at PDK are owned by DeKalb residents and businesses who pay
the county almost $180,000 a year in property taxes.
Capital expenditures, construction, reflects in still another way
4 the importance of the airport. Federal, state and local governments in-
vested $1.6 million at PDK between 1976 and 1979. Private enterprise in-
vested another $4.6 million during the same period for a total of 56.2
million. DeKalb County's contribution of $226,500 was less than four per-
cent of the total capital outlay.
Is there a "bottom line?" Not really. The dollar impact of PDK is
impressive. The airport means 534 million to DeKalb County each year; add
• another $40 million in benefits to the Atlanta area, for a total annual
economic impact of $74 million! . It a]so means convenience and safety in
serving the needs of thousands of local, regional and national businesses.
The airport should not be left alone. It is too important to be supported
in a lukewarm fashion. If DeKalb County is to continue to grow, general
aviation -- and DeKalb-Peachtree Airport -- must be able to continue to
serve the role being served today -- a vital link in the economic c.J.ain of
events in the county.
-28-
ipt•Milli.$11.1114,0110111611 4111001ATII ■•••■•■•,
