Of the total PDK payroll for DeKalb County residents, almost $2.4
million represented total consumer expenditures. The largest single Cate-
ion,' of expenditures was housing which received almost $1.2 million in
' 1979. This category includes: shelter ($714,000) , utilities ($138,000) ,
household operations ($203,000) , and furniture and equipment ($145,000) .
Private transportation accounted for $648,000, or almost 89 percent of total
transportation expenditures. Food purchased for home consumption repre-
sented $420,000, or almost 59 percent of total food expenditures.
Gross Revenues. The monies generated by the various firms and
agencies located at PDK are termed gross revenues. In the case of private
firms, it is called business income and in the case of government agencies,
it is called the annual budget. The salient point is that the economic
impact of PDK is derived, in part, from these gross revenues.
In order to accurately measure economic benefits remaining in the
local area, a distinction must be made between all gross revenues and that
portion of gross revenues spent locally. For purposes of this study, gross
revenues spent locally are termed residual expenditures -- rent, utilities,
local goods and services purchased, and profit. Therefore, residual ex-
penditures do not include the portion of gross revenues which leaves the
local area (leakage) in the form of non-locally manufactured goods purchased
for resale, federal taxes paid, etc. Based upon recent studies of general
aviation airports, it is estimated that 31.8 percent of gross revenues from
FBO operations, 100 percent of government revenues and 70 percent of the
non-aviation revenues are spent locally..
The three FBO's at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport collect revenues from
sales of aircraft and aircraft parts and accessories, and from providing
a variety of services to the flying public. Non-aviation tenants represent
a cross-section of business activities. The 68 businesses and agencies at
-13-
tiAmosii,s Li pagE Ass gic 'ATE',
