' • .. •• •
.M41.6
•
. -
In 1979, the Port of Portland (Oregon) conducted a study of the economic
. _impact of the various air facilities under its jurisdiction, including three
• .ygeneral aviation airports. There- were- an estimated 557 locally.
• . based, general aviation aircraft-at the three facilities. The study found
_
that total impact (direct and induced) of the general aviation facilities
• ' during 1978 was $58 million (value added by individuals and firms in the
"area) , 1,343 jobs and $19 million in payroll. •
It would be virtually impossible for any particular enterprise to
specify what percentage of the company's profits, growth, stock apprecia-
tion, etc. could be attributed to that use of aviation. Many factors help
influence success. Since there is such diversity between aviation users,
it also seems likely that the success story for one would be hard to repli-
cate for another.. However, there is revealing information about the rela-
tionship of corporate aircraft ownership and other components of business
- success among. the leading 1,000 manufacturing firms in the nation.
. .
From 1969 to 1977, the number of Fortune 1000 companies owning
aircraft has risen from 420 to 502 and grows each year, reaching 514 in
late-1978. Moreover, those companies owning an airplane have a much higher
percentage of sales and profit that those who do not: The National Business
Aircraft Association found that the 502 Fortune businesses owned 1,648
aircraft in 1977 and represented:
. 79 percent of the Fortune 1000 employees •
. 83 percent of the Fortune 1000 net sales
. 84 percent of the Fortune 1000 assets
. 84 percent of the Fortune 1000 stockholders equity
. 86 percent of the Fortune 1000 net income
Net income as a percentage of sales averages 5.2 percent for those
companies owning their own aircraft as against 4.1 percent for non-owners.
