An important case study of the benefits of general aviation
airports was conducted in Ohio. In the early-1960's, the State of Ohio
decided to establish an airport in every county. A bond issue and some
local participation funded 64 airport projects, at a cost of $12.4 million.
A later evaluation, contrasting participating and non-participating counties,
showed the following:
• At 20 of the new airports, almost half the activity
was by corporate aircraft and commercial cargo
planes.
• More than half of 150 manufacturing firms selected
at random in the state use the air transportation
facilities frequently.
• Counties -.1ith new airports had a three percent
higher payroll rate increase than did the counties
without.
• Over a four-year period after the airports were
• established, the airport counties netted $250 million
in additional personal income, and had 60,000 more
new jobs than the non-airport counties.
A study was undertaken in Odessa, Texas by the airport board. Based
upon a randomly selected group of 135 area businesses, the research found
that 46 percent of the companies had customers, business associates, or
company personnel who traveled to and from Odessa by business aircraft.
•
• -5-
, 2.2•221211.211.22-1110/121112$021•111
