The airport is one of the busiest in the nation with respect to itinerant traffic -- a measure of its importance and use as a key element in the • local economy. . While the greater portion of the airport's 600 acres is used for avia- tion and associated safety . —sea, a %Umber of tenants on airport property • . have no direct association with aviation. At present, developed portions of the airport are fully utilized and work is underway to expand space • available for aviation purposes. With approximately 448 aircraft based at the airport, PDK is a major center_ for-training, service, sales and related aviation activity. In • 1979, more than 246,000 landings and take-offs were recorded. But flying is only one facet of the airport's importance. Just as downtown offices or suburban plants may be impressive by measures of size, their importance is more accurately gauged by the activity within -- jobs and the economic functions which they represent. In recent years, the growing importance of PDK has been reflected by increased 1?vels of public and private investment. Deregulation of scheduled airlines and increased demands for corporate efficiency have stimulated growth of general aviation. Today, general aviation has far ,.re aircraft in use than all airplanes c.-biped A . c=ries a subs--antial share of all air travel. Recent figures indicate 180,000 general aviation aircraft, compared to 2,100 air carrier aircraft, presently operate through- out the country. Against this backdrop, business leadership in DeKalb County has posed several questions. The underlying theme is: just how important is PDK to the local economy? • This study, then, has been commissioned to seek answers to questions which address that theme. Questions include: -2_ .
