. 8
The Task Force notes that some actions concerning the facilities at
Horace Williams Airport may become necessary and desirable to main-
tain current airport capability and improve safety during the five
plus year period necessary for construction of an alternative air-
port. These include runway resurfacing and marking, installation of
a non-directional beacon for instrument approaches and construction
of some portions of a parallel taxiway. The Task Force su
the University and Orange County review such needs with Town that
Chapel Hill and take any necessary actions, while pursuing the pri-
mary goal of establishing a new airport to serve the community and
the University.
Two Task Force members objected to any facility maintenance actions
or improvements at Horace Williams Airport which might lead to in-
creases in airport operations and could delay development of the new
airport. These members inserted the following
marks as their minority substitute for the preceding in quotation
g paragraph.
paragraph.
"The Task Force acknowledges that there are some ways in which the
present Horace Williams Airport could be better maintained during the
time period required for completion of a new airport
facing and marking of the runway) . Force (e is that County Commissioners should approach Task Force suggests that the
and the University in order to jointly review maintenance needs
and to determine appropriate actions. "
AHEC
UNC's Area Health Education Centers are one of the principal users of
Horace Williams Airport. The Task Force acknowledges with thanks the
letters it has received from several AHEC's in the state, urging
strongly that Horace Williams airport be retained for AHEC use or
that a similarly conveniently located airport be made available.
The Task Force agrees, of course, that Horace Williams Airport pro-
vides a very valuable service to the AHEC program.
The Task Force considers that with the forthcoming opening of I-40, a
similarly convenient site for a new airport can _ Th
Task Force can't help but note, in addition though, thatlthe cone
venience of Horace Williams is steadily being diminished as UNC and
Chapel Hill vehicular traffic continues to increase. It may well be
that a "further out" site will be only slightly less convenient than
a future Horace Williams in a much more congested Chapel Hill area.
Sonsorshib
The Task Force considers strongly that an Orange County airport
would be a paying proposition
would be an economic development
plus for the county
must be operated always with very
high standards
should be an integral part of a
county plan for land use
controls.
INIMEMmommEmelmilmw
