. ,.f
Sconomic I eact n C Aviation - ..
transportation is basic to the economy of any region. In thF, terms
cf the economist, it is one element in the in frastr pture,' that inter-
related web of people and resources that enables an enterprise to begin.
As one of the submerged elements as it were, transportation is often
taken for granted. . We give little thought to the vital role it plays
in linking suppliers, manufacturers, and consumers into a productive and
efficient pattern of distribution.
Aviation is a key clement in the overall transportation netvork. -
Generally; our citizens , ere aware that 200 million: passengers moved
on scheduled air carriers last year. Generally, they are aware that
,aviation contributes importantly to business and industrial applica-
tions. Generally, .they are aware of the essential services aviation
provides in individual and cctmcunity emergencies. 'let, this general
awareness seldom is applied to the specific airport in or near their
community. ,
. . Because aviation is a part of the transportation infrastructure, we .
' often satisfy ourselves with general statements concernine, its economic
contribution. The following statement, taken from an aviation trade
organization publication, is typical: "Because of aviation's vast ,
immeasurable impact on the U.S. economy, everyone benefits from the
nation's air transportation system, even those who don't use it .
directly".
Hard data, particularly at 'the ctunity level, is available, but it
takes work to compile it. The first essential step is to find an
organization or a group of individuals willing to undertake the task.
Consider the local Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, college or university
students - preferably some pup or individual with an interest in
aviation, but not immediately identified with the airport.
Vest, review the six suggested questionnaires and deter ine the extent
to which such data will be available. The survey will provide basic
data regarding the airport and the econemy: .
1. Data on direct emnlvvntent. Questionnaire 1 should be completed . .
. by each employee of the organizations directly involved with the
airport. Include airlines, concessioaairea, fixed based operators ,
freight forwarders, Federal agencies (such as FAA, Weather Bureau,
Customs, etc.) -
2. Date on direct orrri.nizational expense. Questionnaire 2 should be
completed by the local head of each organization directly involved
. with the airport.
