Even though church <br /> building is abandoned cemetery is still in use, <br /> with most recent burial January 1986 . Site is in <br /> some disrepair, with most pre-1920 stones broken . <br /> Some graves marked only by stone outline or only <br /> by metal funeral markers with name and date <br /> illegible. Earliest legible stones date from <br /> 1890 's . <br /> Church was a simple frame structure, abandoned when <br /> new Harris Grove Church was built across the county <br /> Iine in Durham County . Building is stripped and <br /> falling apart. <br /> II . Historical <br /> A . Cemeteries <br /> 1 . TURRENTINE CEMETERY <br /> n/s Hopkins Rd . [SR15377 w/o Bill Poole Rd . CSR1536] <br /> tmr: 1 . 13. .5A <br /> Cemetery of the families of Samuel and Alexander <br /> Turrentine, who settled in Orange County in the <br /> 1750' s . Existence of cemetery was forgotten after <br /> the Civil War . Rediscovered by association of <br /> Turrentine family descendents in 1957 . Two brick <br /> pillars with bronze tablets placed at entrance. <br /> First one reads "This is the family cemetery of <br /> Samuel and Alexander Turrentine, brothers who came <br /> from Ireland in 1751 ." The second reads "Every <br /> Turrentine in America traces his ancestry to this <br /> farm." By custom, whites were buried on the western <br /> side of the cemetery, slaves, and later freed <br /> blacks, on eastern side. Earliest tombstome is <br /> 1784. Most recent burial is 1979 . Most of the early <br /> grave markers, hand etched field stones, have been <br /> taken up and embedded in concrete slabs, cameo <br /> fashion , to prevent further erosion . Land is owned <br /> by town of Carrboro. <br /> 2. THE JAMES WILSON CEMETERY <br /> approximately one mile nw of Turrentine Cemetery, <br /> off Bill Poole Rd . CSR1536] on land once known as <br /> "Old Law ' s Place." <br /> tmr: 1 . 13 <br /> Abandoned and, stones removed . Known to be burial <br /> site of at least four, dating from 1809-1889 . <br /> in <br />
