APPENDIX 1 : <br /> OCCONEECHEE MOUNTAIN NATURAL AREA <br /> a. Name of site. Occoneechee Mountain. <br /> b. Location. Orange County, North Carolina. Sw. of Hillsborough. <br /> USGS Quad. Hillsborough, NC; 7 1/2' , 1968. <br /> 36° 03' 45" N; 78° 07' 15" W. <br /> c. Ownership. <br /> d. Approximate acreage. Unknown. <br /> e. Land use. None. <br /> f. Description of site. The Occoneechee Mountain Area is a relatively undis- <br /> turbed north slope of approximately 20° over quartzite. The community <br /> is primarily chestnut oak--low heath grading into a scrub pine-low <br /> heath on a sharp ridge and down slope into a red oak--tall heath and a <br /> limited beech zone above a narrow belt of bottomland hardwoods. The <br /> canopy trees range from 12-24" DBH. This is a typical montane community <br /> found in the eastern Piedmont. Montane disjuncts on the site are Rhodo- <br /> dendron catawbiense (Purple Laurel) , Fothergilla major, Aralia nudi- <br /> caulis, Osmunda claytoniana (Interrupted fern) , and Asplenium montanum <br /> (Mountain Spleenwort) . The rare Asplenium bradleyi (Bradley's Spleen- <br /> wort) has been reported from the mountain by Robert Teulings (personal <br /> comment).
