Long exposures to high
temperatures may cause fatigue, headache, increased irritability, lowered morale, increased
anxiety, and decreased efficiency. Any sorter who is experiencing heat stress or who suspects that
another sorter is, should notify the Sort Supervisor immediately.
Further exposure to heat may decrease heat stressed sorters' ability to maintain normal body
chemistry and temperature levels and may result in heat cramps, heat exhaustion,or heat stroke.
Sorters should be able to recognize and treat heat stress. Symptoms, first aid procedures, and
preventive measures for heat stress are presented below.
The Sort Supervisor will provide breaks throughout the day. During these breaks, water and other
drinks will be provided to all sorters in an effort to increase hydration and avoid heat-related
accidents.
HEAT CRAMPS
Symptoms: The sorter's body temperature is normal, but the sorter experiences painful spasms
in the muscles of the back, abdomen, arms, and legs. These cramps may occur after
long exposure to excessive heat during which the individual perspires excessively
and loses body fluids and salt.
First Aid: Give the sorter drinking water or Gatorade in small amounts every few minutes and
transport to the nearest medical facility for follow-up medical care.
Prevention: Drink plenty of water or Gatorade and increase salt with meals. However, since salt
may affect other medical conditions, sorters should consult their personal
physicians before increasing their salt intake.
HEAT ' IR II
Symptoms: The sorter may experience fatigue, headache, feelings of nausea, and vomiting.
Perspiration is profuse and clothes are soaked. The skin feels clammy and moist.
Mouth temperature may be normal or even below normal.
Ikessieir consulting inc.
WCS\Planning\Site Safety Plan Page 6 of 11 innovative waste solutions
