PROCLAMATION <br /> • <br /> WHEREAS, democracies cannot exist without protecting their <br /> citizens from persecution and discrimination because of <br /> race, religion, national origin, gender, or affectional <br /> orientation; and whereas the very basis of democracy is <br /> the right of all people to dignity and self respect; <br /> WHEREAS, toleration of diversity is essential for a decent and <br /> democratic society; <br /> WHEREAS, lesbians and gay men often face discrimination in hous- <br /> ing, employment, immigration policy, child custody, and <br /> many other parts of their lives; <br /> WHEREAS, lesbians and gay men are often targets of harassment, <br /> intimidation and violent attack merely because of their <br /> affectional orientation; <br /> WHEREAS, all people have the right to love and live free from <br /> bigotry, violence, and fear, in the workplace, the <br /> family, the streets of our community, our places of <br /> worship and play, our hospitals and clinics, our <br /> schools, and the privacy of our homes; <br /> WHEREAS, lesbians and gay men contribute greatly as citizens to <br /> the political , spiritual , artistic and civic life of <br /> our county, state and nation; <br /> • <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, I , Don Willhoit, Chair of the Orange County Board <br /> of Commissioners, proclaim the week of June 22-29 <br /> ANTIDISCRIMINATION WEEK <br /> Don Willhoit, Chair <br />
