A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CONVERSION OF THE SHEARON HARRIS <br /> PLANT TO A NON-NUCLEAR FUEL PLANT AND EXPRESSING THE OPPOSITION <br /> OF THE TOWN COUNCIL TO THE LICENSING OR OPERATION OF SAID <br /> SHEARON HARRIS PLANT ( 86-6-9/R-la) <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill opposes the <br /> movement of nuclear fuel into our region, the licensing and <br /> loading of the Shearon Harris reactor, and the activation and <br /> operation of the Shearon Harris reactor; and <br /> WHEREAS, emergency planning for the Shearon Harris plant does <br /> not appear adequate to protect the citizens of the Town of <br /> Chapel Hill, and the Town of Chapel Hill is not included in the <br /> evacuation plan for a nuclear power accident at Shearon Harris; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, the Town of Chapel Hill would not receive any regular <br /> power supply from the Shearon Harris facility; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Shearon Harris plant is located within approximate- <br /> ly 20 miles of Chapel Hill' s town limits and within a short <br /> distance of several major population centers in central North <br /> Carolina; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of <br /> Chapel Hill that the Council endorses converting the Shearon <br /> Harris plant to a non-nuclear fuel plant to prevent the produc- <br /> tion of nuclear waste and to avoid a nuclear power accident <br /> occurring in the Triangle area.
