This is a ceremonial post which has
been held most recently by George Teer who has moved
to Raleigh, and before him by Edmund Lynch. The
official duty is an annual visit to the Museum during
which the weights and measures are checked to ascertain
that they are all present and in good condition.
During this visit the Checker wears Colonial costume
and makes a speech about the Colonial history of
Orange County. At the ceremony, the Museum provides
refreshments for visitors.
The weights and measures, belonging to Orange
County in Colonial times, were at some point stored
in the basement of the old courthouse. When the
new courthouse was built, they were "discovered" during
the move. The County Commissioners then gave them to
the Museum and appointed Mr. Lynch the Official Keeper.
Mr. Teer followed in his stead.
It is appropriate that Joe Rosemond be named the
next Keeper as he lives in Hillsborough and comes from
an old Orange County family with an unusual history.
Unlike many whose ancestors came here from Scotland,
Joe traces his ancestry to Poland. In particular, Joe
has as a personal hobby the homes of Colonial Orange
County which he has copied in miniature in woodwork.
Because of his interest in history, his willingness to
dress In costume and engage in historic tomfoolery,
and the contributions his family have made for
generations in Orange County, Joe Rosemond is the
recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Museum
for the post of Official Keeper of the Weights and
Measures of Orange County.
Sincerely ,
Betty Eideniyourser
Chairman, Board of Directors
