- 3
My presentation to you today is part of the first of a three part
study. In a few weeks you will each receive a short narrative report
with graphics describing the present and anticipated traffic problems in
the region. This will be followed later in the summer by a report on
several potential public transportation options for this area (such as
increased vanpooling, commuter lanes, an intraregional express bus system,
and light rail) . We will describe each of the alternatives including
projected costs and impacts. Lastly, the study will look at organizaional
mechanisms for public transportation alternatives. These written and oral
reports are being presented to the seven governing boards of Wake, Durham
and Orange Counties, the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill and the
Town of Cary. We will also be talking to the RDU Airport Authority, the
RT Foundation and Tenants Association and the Raleigh/Cary/Garner and the
Durham/Chapel Hill Transportation Advisory Committees. iivaAha+ aaws
The objective of the RI Public Transportation Study is not to promote
a specific public transportation service alternative or regional transpor-
tation organization. Rather it is to promote full and open discussion of
public transportaion options as part of a program to meet this region's
transportation needs and to build consensus among affected jurisdictions
as to mom what is needed and how it best might work.
In closing, as I mentioned earlier, the first report of this study
will be mailed to each of you very soon. I hope you will consider it care-
fully and let us know any comments, suggestions
a 0
6 ,1--
, ggestions or questions you have to it
or future reports.
Thank you very much for this opportunity to talk with you.
