In addition, 1-4'.1 1-4'.1 c,,^^UMS <br /> is a member of a Technical <br /> Steering Committee which has met several times and is providing valuable <br /> guidance on this study. <br /> The area for this study encompasses Wake, Durham and Orange counties. <br /> -Vi The three we all know, this area has experienced phenomenal rowt <br /> "w last 2 1/2 decades, g h during the <br /> ree Research Triangle counties have increased <br /> in population by 85% over the past 25 years from 325,000 <br /> approximately 600,000 residents today. ' people in 1960 to <br /> Y• Much of this growth has resulted <br /> 1,1 from development of the Research Triangle Park. The Park now has ove <br /> 27,000 employees, roughly comparabl r <br /> Raleigh. The opening of the southern part those who work in downtown <br /> P ar t of the RTP will almost double <br /> the land area of the park and employment inside the Park is expected <br /> reach 50,000 (an 8 to <br /> 3% jump) by the year 2000. Another 50,000 will be <br /> employed in the area around the Park. <br /> The region's total population is increase b expected to incr <br /> A Y about 40% by <br /> the year 2000 and will exceed a million people within 25 years. <br /> This rapid growth in the Triangle has produced many benefits. It h <br /> also created some serious as <br /> problems including traffic congestion and <br /> mobility problems. Traffic congestion would be eased if more of us <br /> closer to our work places lived <br /> places, schools and shopping areas. However, we do <br /> not. Each day many of us travel long distances across the region t <br /> shop and attend school.
