Ellison
Route # 2, Box 53
Mebane, North Carolina 27302
Dear Mr. Ellison:
Ray Nichols and I enjoyed meeting with you about your forestry project.
Please keep this report on file as you may need it later for tax pur-
poses.
At this time all the land on your tract of approximately seventy-five
acres has been cut using a full-tree chipper which not only full utilized
all the trees but also effectively cleared the land of undesirable species
such as Virginia pine and scrub hardwood. This area is now in excellent
shape to plant faster growing Loblolly pines. In most cases, site-
preparation after logging is necessary which can cost anywhere from $6.00
to $90.00 per acre depending on what is needed. You have avoided this
cost with the chipper.
Loblolly pines should be planted on a seven by ten foot spacing. I have
contracted with F. L. Cobb of Caswell County, whom you have met, to plant
this area for you. He will be using improved seedlings grown by the N. C.
Forest Service. The cost of this project will be $55.00 per acre including
labor and seedlings.
We have applied for 40% cost-share funds under the Forest Development Pro-
gram and will contact you as soon as we are notified if money is available
or not.
This tract will be eligible for the Orange County Forest Land Use Tax
break. Should it be planted after you have owned the tract for three years,
it would qualify. This must be applied for in January of that year at
the Orange County Tax Office, and you may need to produce this plan for
their inspection.
The Forest Service will supervise the planting of your trees and take
aerial slides for acreage determination after complete.
You should expect your first pulpwood thinning operation in fifteen to
twenty years. This is important as it releases the remaining pines for
