April 17, 1986
The Orange County Commissioners
Mr. Donald G. Wilhoit, Chairman
Mr. Moses Carey
Mr. Norman Walker
Mr. Ben Lloyd
Ms. Shirley Marshall
RE: The Industrial Development at New Hope Church Road/I 40 Interchange
Dear Sirs and Madam:
As residents of the Hideaway Estates, a development located immediately off
Route 86 in Orange County, we are concerned and alarmed over current plans
which designate 100 acres for industrial development at New Hope Church Road/I
40 Interchange. I This scheme, which promises to bring major industry into a
largely residential area, is simply incompatible with any program that would
protect the integrity of the private communities in the vicinity.
The fact is there are already over 2,400 undeveloped acres in Orange
County which are either zoned or designated for use for industrial planning.
These zones are attractive to industry and have adequate transportation access
and water and sewer services.
Eight years ago when we made our initial home investment in Hideaway
Estates, the most attractive feature of the community was the suburban natural
beauty of the area. Establishing an industrial zone within this rural community
buffer will severely adversely detract from our home community.
As County Commissioners you are charged with a great responsibility -- to
protect the lands and resources of the community from unscrupulous and
irresponsible mismanagement. Industrial development at New Hope Church Road/I
40 interchange would be in clear violation of your responsibilities to the
community at large.
Finally, the fact that Mr. Norman Walker owns real estate within the
proposed industrial zone represents a clear conflict of interest. This is a very
disturbing fact. It would be unconscionable to have a County Commissioner
vote on a land zoning plan when his personal financial interest are, at the same
time, at stake.
Thank you for your consideration of our concerns and attention to our
resolute resistance to the proposed industrial zoning of our community.
Very truly yours,
Dr. Steven J. Greenberg
Lise K. Temple-Greenberg
SJG:ghp
