Box 87
Pittsboro, North Carolina 27312
Dear Marvin:
Since our last meeting to discuss the boundary questions
February 11, 1986 I have had opportunity to assemble more
information which is attached. It includes as - follows:-
First is a February 15, 198:5 letter from Mr. George Cole
who refers to an arbitration with Mary Smith, who died in,
1885. The arbitration caused the line to be moved "some 600
feet south.l" He states that the new line established has.
been considered the Orange Chatham line since that. date
(about 1880) . Bill Laws has been trying to find an abstract
of title which we thought might give a point on the ground
from which to measure the 600 feet,.
Maps of the ASCS (Agriculture Stabilization and Conser-
vation Service) dated 1938 and 1966 show the line to be at
the intersecting point of what are now Smith Level and 15-
501. If you would have the Chatham ASCS office check the
maps which correspond to Orange County sub maps 28 and 26
(1966) we will be able to see if the two correspond.
A third exhibit is a photo by which acreage allotments
were made by the Orange County ASCS office in 1938. It shows
that such allotments were approved south of any line location
now under consideration. This probably accounts for some of
the citizen confusion that exists.
Next is the January 26, 1946 notarized deed of C. S.
Partin which conveys 11. 73 acres of land to D. A. and Grace
Lowe. Note that "Smith Land" or "old C. H. Partin Land" was
a tract lying in Chatham and Orange Counties yet the eleven
acre parcel is recorded as lying within Orange County. An
accompanying plot by metes and bounds gives the shape of the
land. When related to the Orange County land photo 22-48 it
will be seen that the south line of the tract lies directly
across from the intersection point of the two roads (Smith
Level and 15-501) .
Since no single line proposal (blue, green, red, and
orange--per the orthophoto) sufficiently addresses the
