•
Study Committee on Carrboro Senior Center Space
1 4F Report
November 6, 1985
The Study Committee met on Wednesday, November 6th, 1:30 pm
at the Artsahoel nutrition site located in Cart- Mill Mall ,
Carrboro. The committee members Present_ were Jean Wagner,
Ruth West, Carol Anderson and Jerry Passmore. Three conditions
(now/near future)were identified by the committee that exist
in Carrboro:
1. The Carrboro Nutrition Site operated by JQCCA will not
have meeting space next December, 1986.
2. The Artschool wbee provides the current space for senior
citi+ens at S50 per month plans to move to new renovated
space (old pioaly wiaely, .w01 E. Main St) and can no
longer afford this rent fee in the new Artschool .
3. The present space for senior Citizens in Carrboro is
not adequate for individual services or group activities.
The is only one large room in which all activities (eating.
arts/crafts class, etc ) take place.
The study committee reviewed several possible options to resolving
the situation described above.
Option 71 - Homestead Community Center. This space owned by
Orange County, managed by the County Recreation
Dept. is a large one room facility (approx 3.000
square feet) located outside the City limits of
Carrboro. The committee rejected this option for
the following reasons:
1. Outside the Carrboro city limits, far from the
participants homes, many would not want to go
that far. (Approx. 5 miles from downtown)
2. Lose of Political/financial support. The Town
of Carrboro (Board/Rec. Staff) identify and
support the existing Senior Citizens program,
actually pay the Nutrition Manager's salary.
3. Inaccessible to health/social /community services.
Shopping, drug store, health care agencies would
not be easily available. Special transportation
would have to be arranged by DoA.
4.. The Property and Facility is in dire need of
renovation (s100, 000+) before it could even be
used for senior citizen programs,
option#C - Carrboro Community Park with Construction of a Facility
The Community Park located on Hwy 54 outside the
present Carrboro City limits is owned by the Town
and has plenty of land. The committee rejected this
option for the following reasons:-
1 . There would be need for a sizable amount of funds
(5150, 000) to build such a facility. Decisions on
who would pay for the facility and who would- be
responsible for manaQement such as Orange County
or Town of Carrboro.
