NORTH CAROLINA
County Government
Serving its Citizens since 1663
COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK
FEBRUARY 23-28
Governor James G. Martin has established February 23rd through 28th,
as "Countyl, Government Week" in North Carolina and is urging citizens
across the state to learn more about the role of county government in
their lives and to be more involved as county citizens. ' In
accordance; the Orange County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the
week as "Orange County Government Week".
Even though counties have not been the most recognized governmental
entity, they are highly responsible units of government which have a
direct impact on local citizens. This is particularly true in Orange
County where they have for many years been given the responsiblity
for funding or operating a great number of local services: health
care, social services, veteran's services, tax assessment and
collection, planning and zoning, parks and recreation, services for
the elderly, sheriff's department, ambulance services, deed
registration, building inspections and agricultural extension. They
also provide funding for local schools. Many of these programs are
mandated by state and federal law, but are administered and/or funded
by Orange County.
In Orange County, the volunteer spirit is very much alive and well
and the volunteers serve as "Partners in Progress". Through their
volunteer involvement, citizens learn more about community needs and
resources and serve as communications links to the entire community.
A special Ireception will be hosted by the Orange County Board of
Commissioners recognizing the volunteers on February 27th from
7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Big Barn in Hillsborough.
A host of activities in observance of this week include a voluntary
essay competition for the high school students on the importance of
citizens being involved in County government. Students will be asked
to prepare drawings of types of services provided by the County.
These drawings will be on display in the County buildings during the
week. Also, county officials will speak to school children on
specific topics of local government. Phamplets outlining Orange
County local government will be available at reception desks
throughout ( County offices and distributed to local government
classes, Chambers of Commerce and other community groups.
II
II
