In Mebane there was an informal committee of concerned <br /> businessmen, but they had no budget or staff-, and, when <br /> inquiries needed staff input, the economic development <br /> professional from neighboring Atemer:ce County performed this <br /> function for them. <br /> D. The Chapel Hi LL/Cerrboro Chamber of Commerce saw the need, <br /> and dealt with inquiries ad hoc, though they had no .staff <br /> trained specifically for this task. In 1962 the Chamber <br /> seriously considered adding this function to their activi— <br /> ties. <br /> SOLUTION. <br /> In December 1902 the Board of County Commissioners passed a <br /> Resolution creating a county--wide, joint public/private Economic <br /> Development Commission (EOM , to carry out an economic development <br /> program for all portions of the County and its encompassed muni- <br /> cipalities. The role of the EDO is to formulate an economic develop- <br /> ment strategy and to implement that strategy, including the attrac- <br /> tion of new businesses, assisting existing businesses to expand and <br /> grow, and encouraging new enterprises to be started. <br /> The EDC is made up of nine voting members appointed to three— <br /> .year terms by the Board of County Commissioners; the terms are <br /> staggered to ensure continuity..
