I, r.
i D8 r
Brief History of the "Rock House"
This home was built in 1921 by Mack Rigsbee who was a prominent
citizen of Hillsborough , as well as a well known bootlegger. The
house is built of solid stone masonry on complete timbers . Dressed
tree trunks are part of the foundation . Upon completion , the house
served as a warehouse and distribution center for the illegal
moonshine. With this in mind , Mr. Rigsbee built his home with secret
passageways , false walls , and hidden storage areas . After two years ,
Mrs . Rigsbee ''reported her husband to the federal authorities . He
was subsequently arrested, tried, and convicted . The house was
sold by the Internal Revenue Service for back taxes- as a result of
tax evasion charges . During the depression the house was sold and
resold as people bought it in the hopes of finding large amounts of
hidden cash and/or moonshine that was rumored to be stored there .
Secondary stonework and repairs were completed by the Baldwin sisters .
It is currently owned by William and Natalie Tietelbaum who have
made many improvements and repairs .
y I
