Goal <br /> The primary goal of the volunteer advocacy program is to provide immediate <br /> support, information, and service to victims of domestic violence in Durham <br /> and Orange Counties. <br /> II. Narrative <br /> The following services are available to victims of domestic violence through <br /> our volunteer advocacy program: <br /> emergency housing for immediate safety through local motels and <br /> boarding homes <br /> provision of food and transportation related to temporary placement <br /> outside the home <br /> crisis and short-term counseling <br /> legal information on civil and criminal rights and procedures <br /> accompaniment to the Magistrate's Office and to court in criminal Oases <br /> preparation for a criminal court hearing <br /> referral and advocacy with other community agencies <br /> These services are available free of charge, on a 24 hour, seven days per week <br /> basis. A battered woman-contacts our services bY calling either Hassle House <br /> in Durham County or HELPLINE in Orange County and asking for the Advocate <br /> on-call for that day. <br /> The above services are provided by trained volunteer Advocates (both men <br /> and women), The responsibilities of the Advocate include:' <br /> participation in a comprehensive 30 hour training program <br /> mandatory attendance at monthly Advocate meetings <br /> being on-call to provide services at least twice a month <br /> supervisory consultations with staff <br /> recordkeeping <br /> The Coalition has 30-50 volunteer Advocates actively on-call at any one time. <br /> Since the volunteer Advocate, as primary service provider, is the core, of <br /> the advocacy program, considerable administrabive time and program support <br /> is given to the training and supervision of the volunteers. The volunteer <br /> Advocacy program has been in operation since 1977. <br /> III, • <br /> Objectives <br /> A. Provide services to an estimated 70 women per month • <br /> B. Provide advocacy training to 50 new volunteers <br /> C. Supervise volunteer advocates through monthly meetings, individual <br /> 4Sonforonees, and evaluation of monthly repotting form <br /> COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM <br /> . • <br /> I. Goal <br /> The goals of the Coalition community education program are to educate <br /> and train the community about the domestic violence issue and to publicize <br /> the availability of our services, <br /> II. Narrative <br /> The act.ivities in this program include,: <br /> - frequent media exposure through newspaper articles, television <br /> coverage •and radio -h05 • <br /> - distribution of posters and brochures describing Coalition services <br /> - speaking engagements with community groupS such as civic clubs, <br /> churches, school and university clasSes <br />
