S
on past growth rates either a linear or exponential formula was used to
estimate future population growth. While more sophisticated methods exist,
the relatively simple extrapolation formulas used have been found to be
quite accurate in predicting future population size. An additional advan
tagp was that the calculations could be done in a few hours using a hand-
held calculator. Further details on the methodology used can be found in
Appendix A.
Projections: 1980-2000.
POPULATION. Table 2-60 shows the population projections for Orange County
by Township during the plan period 1980-2000. As can be seen from the
table above, Orange County's population by the year 2000 is projected to
be 140,230 persons, almost a doubling in population during the plan period.
Chapel Hill Township will continue to predominate as the most populous
Township in the County. Hillsborough Township will increase significantly
in recognition of a possibly greater role the Town of Hillsborough will
have in future settlement patterns, Cedar Grove Township will remain stable
and not increase in population during the plan period as the Township most
removed from development pressures.
_ . •te
59
