I <br /> OTHER SIGNIFICANT TRANSPORTATION ELEMENTS <br /> Orange County's transportation system is dominated by the road network, <br /> but is not entirely defined by it. Rail facilities and air services <br /> additionally comprise the transportation system and contribute to the <br /> movement of people and goods through Orange County. <br /> RAIL FACTLTTIES. Orange County is served by the Southern Railroad which <br /> traverses the central portion of the County in an east/west direction <br /> through Eno, Hillsborough and Cheeks Townships parallel to the I-85/US 70 <br /> corridor. The Southern Railroad also serves the southern portion of the <br /> County, running south from 1-85 through Chapel Hill Township to the <br /> Carrboro-Chapel, Hill area. This spur delivers coal to the University <br /> of North Carolina power plant. <br /> AIR SERVICES. The main general aviation airport in Orange County is <br /> Horace-Williams, owned and operated by the University of North Carolina. <br /> However, the recently announced phase-out of the airport has contributed <br /> to the controversy surrounding the need and location of new air facial- <br /> ,- ties in the County providing the same level of service. A number of <br /> small private airstrips are located throughout the County serving a <br /> small amount of air traffic use. <br />
