Most of Cheeks Township, both north and south of the 1-85 "- and US 70 transportation corridor, is rural in character and consists of _ agricultural land uses and scattered non-farm development. ° Eno Township is located in west-central Orange County. Current Township population is 4456 persons. There are no incorporated places. The 1-85- US 70 transportation corridor occupies the southern portion of the Town- ship and has attracted residential and non-residential development. The highwas give southern Eno Township good access to the City of Durham and the employment opportunities in the City and at Duke University. As a result, Eno Township has had a population growth rate of 7.5% per annum -- over the past 10 years, the highest rate of any Township. The remainder of Eno Township, especially north of St. Mary's Road is rural and agric- ultural in character. Eno Township is currently not served by central sewers. Water service is provided in two areas at the eastern and western boundaries of the Town- ship. City of Durham water service has recently been extended along US 70 into Orange County near the interchange with 1-85. Water lines from the Town of Hillsborough extend into Eno Township along US 70 as far east as the junction of US 70 and Bypass 70. A unique feature in Eno Township is the Eno State Park. It is the only North Carolina State Park that is linear in character, with sections of the park extending along the Eno River in Eno Township and on into Durham County. Aquisition of land or easements are incomplete but major sections of park lands have been acquired-.- Existing sections of the Park . are shown on the Existing Land Use Map. The two southern townships in Orange County are Chapel Hill and Bingham ° townships. Chapel Hill Township contains the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. The population of these two Towns combined is 39,555 persons or 51% of total Cow , pOpulation. The population of Ch.oel Hill Township is 50,572 persons. Employment centers in Chapel Hill Township include the University of North Carolina, North Carolina Memorial Hospital and Blue Cross-Blue Shield. The proximity of the Township to Durham and Research Triangle Park means ° that people can commute from the Township to these other centers of em- ployment. The Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) provides water and sewer ser- vice to the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro as well as to fringe areas in Orange, Chatham and Durham Counties. The primary water supply for Chapel Hill - Carrboro is University Lake located just to the west of Carrbor k Duke University has large holdings of land in northern Chapel Hill Township which are used for teaching, research and limited recreation. These large areas in forest are an asset to the Township and their conversion for re- sidential development would certainly have a major impact on land use patterns in the Township.
