APPENDDCC
CARRBCRO ACTIVITY CENTERS 1
Detailed Descriptions of the Carrboro Activity Centers
EXISTING
1. Carrboro Downtown (CBD) - This is a linear zone extending from the
Chapel Hill line westward to Carrboro Hall. The most intense
commercial district in Carrboro, it is designed to accomodate a
great variety of retail and office uses. Under the proposed Land
Use Ordinance the Carrboro downtown will also include high density
residential use.
PROPOSED
1. Bolin Creek Collector Road (Neighborhood shopping) - A draft
Collector Roads Plan, and the draft Residential Rezoning Plan
for the Carrboro Planning District indicate a medium density
residential neighborhood along Bolin Creek. A limited commercial
center will be appropriate within this area. The commercial uses
would be confined to neighborhood needs.
2. Intersection of NC 54 (Business) and NC 54 (By-Pass) (Neighborood
Shopping) - Limited business uses which do not actively compete
with the Carrboro downtown will be located at this major inter-
section. A convenience store is currently at this location.
3. Smith Level Road and Culbreath Road (Neighborhood shoppirg) - A
draft Residential Rezoning Proposal indicates a medium and high
density zone to the west of Culbreath Road. This intersection
is a reasonable location for neighborhood business and services.
4. Homestead (Neighborhood shopping) (This activity center is located
on Homestead Road near Chapel Hill High School and corresponds with
a County activity node.) - This neighborhood shopping area would
provide goods and services for an area which is suitable for urban
development. The development of this activity center is considered
to be some time away.
1
Source: Memo from the Town of Carrboro Planning Department, August 22, 29
187
