or 8.4 square miles. The watershed which would drain into the proposed
Cane Creek reservoir covers 20,160 acres or 31.5 square miles of Bingham
Township.
STEEP SLOPES. Steep slopes represent a limited constraint, occurring pri-
marily along the Haw River and some sections Cane Creek.
SOILS. Soil conditions in the east-central and southeastew area of the
Township present some limitations to building or development activity be-
cause of heavy clay content and shallow depth of bedrock.
PLANNING FRAMEWORK AND APPLICATION
Organizing Concepts
The following Township policy statements represent the organizing concepts
around which the Land Use Plan for Bingham Township is constructed:
1) The agricultural and rural residential character of the Township
Should be maintained.
1 2) Existing and potential water supply watersheds in the Township
should be developed in a way that will minimize impacts on water
quality and not conflict with agricultural activities.
3) The White Cross area has the characteristics of a community within
the Township and this character should be enhanced.
4) Residential development that does occur in the Township should
be planned for areas that will not create negative impacts on
agriculture or potential or existing water supply watersheds.
5) The area along North Carolina Highway 54 is not appropriate for
strip-type commercial development; rather, development should
take place in compact clusters focused on designated activity
nodes and separated from residential areas, thereby preserving
the utility of the highway as an important throughfare.
Population Projections and Land Reauirements: 1980-2000
One of the initial and fundamental steps in the land use planning process
is the calculation of the amount of land required to accomodate projected
growth in an area. Generally, the amount of land required for residential
and associated non-residential and commercial uses is directly related to
the size of the population. The following tables summarize the population
projections and estimated land requirements for Bingham Township during
the plan period:
