0 ENO TOWNSHIP FLAN . -
TOWNSHIP PROFILE: SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS
Eno Township, located in the east - central portion of Orange County,
occupies 24,000 acres and contains 9% of the total County land area.
The character of the Township is defined by a number of physical and
existing land use features. The area of the Township north of St. Mary's
Road is agriculturally-based and marks the southern limit of the tobacco
farming area that extends into Little River Township and north into
Caswell County. The southern portion of the Township is traversed by
Interstate 85, U.S. 70 and a main line of the Southern Railroad, each
paralleling one another in an east-west direction across the Township.
The Eno River flows east from HillADorough across the Township, turns
sharply and flows directly south before turning to the east again just
north of 1-85. The southeastern portion of the Township is in close
proximity to the City of Durham. Residential development focused on
Durham is occurring in this area. Development pressures in this area
are likely to continue during the plan period.
Socio Economic Features
Population figures from the 1980 Census indicate that between 1970 and
1980 the population of Eno Township increased by 1900 persons, from
2550 persons in 1970 to 4450 persons in 1980. This represents an average
annual rate of growth of 7.5% during the past decade, almost a three-fold
increase in the population growth rate during the 1960 - 1970 period.
The population of the Township accounts for 6% of the total County
population.
Much of this growth has occurreclin southern and eastern Eno Township.
This area has good access to employment centers in the City of Durham and
Research Triangle Park via U.S. 70 and 1-85. The continued growth of
Research Triangle Park will probably continue to contribute to a popula-
tion growth rate for the Township consistent with that experienced over
the past ten years.
Exist" • Land Use and Infrastructure
The southern portion of the Township has experienced increased suburbani-
zation in recent years due to development pressures associated with the
Township's proximity to Durham and the existence of a major transportation
corridor which traverses the Township's southern tier. The northern tier
of the Township retains its agricultural and rural character and consists
of low-density residential development and a few commercial uses.
Eno Township is characterized by clusters of residential and non-farm
development generally referred to as neighborhoods and communities. These
social. units were of greater importance in the past when such individual
areas were more isolated and people generRlly more self-sufficient. They
