.6 CEDAR GROVE TOWNSHIP PLAN
TOWNSHIP PROFILE: SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS
Cedar Grove Township, located in north-western Orange County, occupies
51,700 acres and contains 20% of the total County land area.
The Township is characterized by a predominantly rural-agricultural
landscape with limited low density commercial and residential development.
It is the most removed of the County's seven township from urban growth
pressures. It is likely that the Township will, retain its rural agricul-
tural character over the planning period, even as other townships experi-
ence significant non-farm development.
Socio-Economic Features
The 1980 U.S. Census figure for Cedar Grove Township is 3166 persons,
which accounts for 4% of the total County population. This represents a
.06% average annual growth rate from a 1970 population of 3146 persons.
This slight population increase reflects the relative isolation of the
Township from development pressures. Population projections for the Town-
ship indicate that the population will actually decline during the plan
period.
The predominant economic activity in Cedar Grove Township is agriculture.
The Township is one of the most important agricultural areas in the County
and will probably retain that distinction during the plan period.
Exist" : Land Use and Infrastructure
Cedar Grove Township is an agriculturally based area containing limited
low-density commercial and residential development. The major employment
centers of Durham, Research Triangle Park and Burlington are well outside
a convenient commuting distance from the Township. The construction of
proposed Interstate 40 extension is unlikely to cause a significant change
in the commutation pattern.
Cedar Grove Township is not currently served by public sewer or water and
no plans exist to extend services to the Township. As a consequence,
Cedar Grove Township is likely to retain its rural character over the plan
period, experiencing minimal development pressures.
Transportation
A modified version of the North Carolina Highway Functional Classification
System has been used to describe the road network in Cedar Grove Township.
This system describes parts of a road network based on the factors of
access and mobility. The most important roads (Interstate and arterial
highways) provide the best service (shortest travel time) to and from
important employment, shopping, educational and population centers.
Roads of lesser importance (collector roads) do not provide as good a
