Demographic Data and Baseline Indicators
a. Population.--It is estimated that the Orange County population as of Ain
1 , 1980 was 73,833. Over the past two decades the rate of increase has
hovered at 20% each decade (21.24% for the period 1960-1970 and 19.78% f
1970-1980). In comparison, the State of North Carolina as a whole •
experienced a 1 .93% toss of population in the period 1960-1970, and a 5.
gain in the period of 1970-1980.
It is expected that Orange County's growth will continue to be far
greater than that of the State as a whole, which could mean the demand f
health care services will also increase at -a greater-than-average rate,
addition, increased density of population, if it results in new construc
tion can create a demand for environmental health services .
The age distribution of the Orange County population differs marked
from the State as a whole in some categories . As the list below shows ,
Orange County has a slightly lower proportion of young children (age 9 o:
younger) and adults between 30 and 44, but has a considerably lower
proportion of adults 45 and over. However, the greatest divergence is ii
the ages 20-29, especially in the 20-24 ranges where the prpportion of ti
population in these ages is much greater in Orange County. The presence
of a major university accounts for the cluster in these age groups.
Ages North Carolina Orange Courity.
0 -; 9 14.32 12.39%
10-19 17.76 17.00
20-24 10.27 21.22
25-29 8.74 11.87
30-44 19.36 17.07
45-64 19.41 13.29
65-UP 10. 14 7.20
The greatest concentration of population (50,212 persons) is in Chapel Hi
Township, which contains the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and
constitutes 68% of the total county population.
The target populations for family planning services are males and
females under 19. This emphasis is based on the need indicated by the
fertility-related rates per 1 ,000 females in.
