re, <br /> ORANGE COUNTY LAND USE PLAN <br /> LITTLE RIVER TOWNSHIP COMPONENT <br /> TOWNSHIP PROFILE SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS <br /> Little River Township in north-eastern Orange County is rural in character <br /> and agriculturally based. However, sections of the Township within reasonable <br /> commuting time to the City of Durham are beginning to see suburban residential <br /> development. If this trend continues, the character of much of Little River <br /> Township could change dramatically in the future, <br /> Social - Economic <br /> The 1980 U. S. Census preliminary count for Little River Township is 1770 <br /> persons. That is a 46.3% increase over the 1970 population of 1210. Of equal <br /> interest is the distribution pattern of this increased population, The sub- <br /> areas in eastern Little River Township closest to Durham contain a dispropor- <br /> tionate amount of the population, The population distribution reflects the <br /> fact that people who live in these area probably work and shop in Durham. Much <br /> of Little River Township is within a half-hour commute of major employment <br /> centers in Durham. <br /> The major agricultural activities in Little River Township are tobacco <br /> farming, egg production, dairying and swine operations. Tobacco is an important <br /> cash crop in the Township and four of Orange County's five commercial egg farms <br /> are located there. <br /> The population of Little River Township is projected to reach nearly <br /> 6000 persons by the year 2000. As the population of Little River Township <br /> increases, it will inevitably put pressure on agricultural activities. <br /> Transportation <br /> The two major highways in Little River Township are N.
