How much interest exists in making use of the several alter- <br /> native long-distance conpanies if the service were available <br /> in all areas of the County as opposed to only highly concen- <br /> trated ones. <br /> 3. Explore alternative telephone system features that would <br /> afford the residents and businesses of Orange County the <br /> most up-to-date communicationcapebilities. <br /> 4. Monitor the design for the new digital center proposed by <br /> Centel for installation in 1987 to keep the County apprised <br /> of the progress being made in engineering and of any choices <br /> the community may have in system features. <br /> The task force should develop recommendations and report find- <br /> ings to the Board of Commissioners within 120 days following the <br /> formation of this fact-finding group. <br /> In Lddition to other membership as the Board decides, it is <br /> reOmmended the task force be comprised of one representative <br /> from each of the phone companies with service area in Orange <br /> Cou4ty. These would include Southern Bell, OTE, Mebane and <br /> Centel. <br /> IMPACT: ForiBillsborough to be part of an EAS. The previously estimated <br /> cost was $2.51 per month per residence and $6.12 per business. <br /> Cost of HAS for Chapel Bill and Durham was to have been an <br /> additional monthly charge of $3.55 for residences and $8.28 for <br /> businesses. <br /> BECOMMENDATION(S/: <br /> Approve establishment of the EAS Task Force with the outlined <br /> charge and at a membership level and composition which the Board <br /> feels would be the most effective. <br /> 1 <br />
