• <br /> 046 <br /> Old Police Building <br /> We believe the continued presence of local government In the Town Center <br /> is appropriate. Therefore, we suggest the following: <br /> 1. Renovate Interior (and exterior as needed), add elevator (building <br /> .7. now lacks access for handicapped persons) and make a major addi- <br /> lion to the building. <br /> 2. Use the remodeled, expanded facility for a meeting place, some <br /> • euriicipal office space, and/or library space. <br /> Administrative office space needs are outorowina the Municipal Building. <br /> • One or more components, such as the 3 development-related departments, <br /> or the offices of the Mayor, Council, Manager and Attorney, could be <br /> transferred to the Old Police Buildina. <br /> Recent conversations with County officials have included the suggestion of <br /> ' . sharing this site with the County for a local government center. <br /> The County needs a meeting facility, as welt as office and service deliv- <br /> ery space, in southern Orange County. A local government center would <br /> allow the sharing of capital and operating costs as well as of a meeting <br /> rooro: and other space. <br /> 'A combination of uses on this site would be convenient to residents, an <br /> efficient use of the site, and a commitment to maintaining the vitality of <br /> downtown. <br /> Many questions would need to be answered. A consultant would reed to <br /> determine the specific space needs of both the Town and County, and <br /> would then need to determine the adequacy of the site to accommodate <br /> space and parking needs. <br /> Discussions would also be necessary between the staffs and governing <br /> bodie.s. <br /> Proposed Courses of Action <br /> Southern Park and Fire Station <br /> Authorize the Manager to explore the area and continue discussion with <br /> owners of potential sites, and to report to Council on November 25. <br /> - <br /> Library <br /> Ask the Library Board of Trustees to evaluate the five expansion options <br /> listed earlier and to report to Council on November 25. <br /> Public Meetino Room and Office Space <br /> Authorize the Manager to negotiate with the County regarding a Joint <br /> • Local Government Center at the Old Police Building; and authorize the <br />
