C0 FOR WOMEN ANNUAL REPORT, 1984-85 Page 6 <br /> 10 <br /> In February, the Commission nominated Betty Compton for a Distinguished <br /> Women of North Carolina Award. Ms. Compton is an Orange County nurse <br /> practitioner who has pioneered medical care improvement for rural N. C. <br /> communities through nurse practioner services. <br /> Rita Berman worked throughout the fall with the Orange Congregations in <br /> Mission to develop a financial counseling program for displaced Cone Mill <br /> workers'. This staff ad hoc project is only one example of the Commission's <br /> response to community problems. <br /> During the budget process, the Executive Committee reviewed budget <br /> request from Child Care Network, Rape Crisis, Women's Health Counseling <br /> Service, the Coalition for Battered Women, the Women's Center and Planned <br /> Parenthood of Orange County. Recommendations were made to the Orange County <br /> Board of Commissioners regarding the level of funding these agencies should <br /> receive from Orange County. The Commission's recommendations had an obvious <br /> impact on funding decisions. <br /> V. OTHER ACTIVITIES <br /> Legislation. Legislative Liaison for the Commission, Carolyn Lupo, re- <br /> searched spouse abuse and domestic violence legislation, and drafted <br /> appropriate resolutions and letters on behalf of the Commission. She also <br /> followed legislation to set up a study Commission for pay equity and flex- <br /> ible fringe benefits for state personnel. Letters were also sent to our <br /> legislative delegation on these matters. In addition, Ms. Lupo attended a <br /> lobbying session sponsored by the Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence <br /> and visited Orange County legislators. <br /> Copies of correspondence and resolutions were shared with other Councils <br /> across the state and with the North Carolina Council on the Status of Women. <br /> 1985-86 Mini Grant. The Commission applied for and was awarded a mini-grant <br /> in the amount of $500.00 to hold a half day workshop on how to start your <br /> own business. The workshop must be held in Hillsborough before December,1985. <br /> Preliminary planning is underway, a- tentative date of September 21 has been <br /> established. <br /> Harriet Berry Road Project. In May, 1985 the Commission was contacted by <br /> Regional Coordinator Kathy Harrelson with information on a Hillsborough <br /> • <br /> native, Harriet Berry, who was a leader of the "good roads" movement in <br /> the 1920's. <br /> The North Carolina Council on the Status of Women through Ms. Harrelson, <br /> requested the Commission to pursue having an Orange County road named in <br /> honor of Ms. Berry. The Executive Committee endorsed the project to be <br /> completed in 1985.86. <br /> Budget Expansion Request. The Commission requested expansion of staff <br /> support for the 1985-86 budget year. Commission members were active in <br /> this effort to obtain adequate support from the Board of Commissioners for <br /> the approved projects. <br />
