068
improvements to the east end of the corridor will be necessary in the-
near future.
The adopted Chapel Hill/Carrboro Thoroughfare Plan recommends that
Weaver Dairy Road be realigned at its eastern' end to connect to Sage
Road, This would create an intersection with US. 15-501 superior to
the Erwin Road/US 15-501 intersection. This- new alignment should- be a
five lane section, 65' feet wide.. Figure 9 shows the
realignment,. proposed
Currently, the- Greenf i el ds. development is building the- portion of- the
realignment from Erwin Road- to the US 15-S01 Boulevard. This- should
help the. Erwin Road/Boulevard. intersect.ion somewhat. However, the
full realignment would be necessary for the corridor to function
properly.
We feel that the Town ultimateiy should become involved in building.
the portion of the real'i gnmen t from Erw i n Road to Weaver Dairy Road.
This segment would. cross
Greenfieids se portions of six smaller parcels whereas the
segment only crosses one large parcel , Many years could-
pass before we achieve a. completed realignment if the Town counts on
developers to build the segment.. . We- recommend that the Staff ask
Council to include the portion of the Weaver- Dairy Road realignment
between Erwin Road and Weaver Dairy Road as a top priority street
improvement- project.
The NC 86/Weaver Dairy Road- intersection would continue to operate- at
an- acceptable level as newt developments are- occupied. However, the
opening of I-40 could impact the intersection. We are not certain at
this point- what impact would occur so we did not consider it in this
report..
All in all , we feel that transportation impacts created by approved
and proposed developments- would. be significant, particulary at the
Erwin Road/15-501. intersection. Our recommendation to complete the
Weaver Dairy Road realignment should solve the negative traffic
impacts that would occur.
