014 COMMISSION FOR WOMEN ANNUAL REPORT, 1984-85 Page 2. II. OPERATIONS Office. Administrative Secretary Rita Berman left her Commission post in December 1984 to become Communications Specialists with the Federal-Credit Union in the Research Triangle Park. The vacancy was filled in February, 1985 by Carolyn Lupo of Cary. Ms. Lupo brings strong administrative and organi- zational skills to this position. More importantly, she is an ardent feminist with a clear vision of what the Commission should be doing as an advocate for women. Maldy Hodge has been with the Commission as Clerk/Receptionist since March, 1984 under the auspices of the National Caucus and Center on Black Aged program through the Orange County Department on Aging. This year she has assumed greater and greater responsibility for record keeping, purchasing, filing and mailings to Commission members. During the Spring semester, Laura Yost served as an intern with the Commission through the UNC Women's Studies Program. Ms. Yost provided technical assistance to collect and analyze data for review of the Job Training Partner- ship Act. Membership/Orientation. The Commission began the year with 15 members representing six of the seven Orange County townships. Only .Cheeks township was not represented. A half day orientation planned by Rita Berman and Dana Baldwin was held in September. New Commission members were briefed about the role of a Commission member and the power inherent in such an appointive position. During the year. relocation or work conflict resulted in the resignation of Judy McNeil (October, 1984), Edith Hubbard (December, 1984), Bettye Clark (April, 1985) and Elaine Parker (April, 1985). Alethea Burt resigned in March, 1985 due to serious health problems. Evelyn Poole-Kober of Hillsborough township resigned in November, 1984. During the 1983-84 reorganization, the Executive Committee was assigned to handle membership with second vice-Chair Dana Baldwin chairing the Committee. As a result the recruitment and interview process has been greatly improved. ' The membership has recommended filling vacancies and orienting new members immediately instead of filling vacancies and expiring terms at the same time. The Commission begins the 1985-86 year with 14 members representing five townships, with Cheeks and Cedar Grove townships unrepresented. Of the 14 new members, 5 are black and 9 are white; all are employed;-and they range in age from 35 to 62. Occupations upations and interest represented include family therapist; editor; peer counselor; employment counselor; accountant; psychotherapist; church, school, community volunteers; precinct chair; etc.
