ORANGE 013 COUNTY ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN ANNUAL REPORT June 30, 1985 I. INTRODUCTION After nine years as an agency of Orange County government, the role of the Commission for Women as an advocate for women in need is firmly estab- lished. Improved employment for women remains as the motivating cause behind Commission projects. Major 1984-85 projects were (1) a comprehensive review of the Job Training Partnership Act and its impact on Orange County women, (2) com- pletion of data collection for the county-wide computer based information- referral system, (3) research and policy analysis of sexual harassment in the workplace, and (4) a survey of 80 public and private sector employers on employee fringe benefits. A review of Orange County's affirmative action plan was cancelled due to the relocation and resignation of the chair of this committee. Internal activities included (1) an in-depth half day orientation for new members, (2) expanded coordination with other agencies on a wide range of human.service projects, (3) increased client contact through office drop-in and phone referrals, (4) bi-monthly programs to increase members' knowledge on specific issues, (5) recruitment and training of an intern from the UNC Women's Studies Program, and (6) extensive contact with the legislature on bill affecting women. Once again, through the efforts of one Commission member, the Piedmont Technical Institute-sponsored GED class successfully continued. Finally, the Commission applied for and was awarded a mini-qra.-t to hold ,a Fall, 1985 half day workshop on how to start your own business. A planning retreat in January and recruitment of new members to implement the fall work- shop and other adopted goals rounded out a busy year.
