SOLID WASTE: <br /> LANDFILLS: <br /> Wake county has two landfills and is developing a third. These serve the rural <br /> areas and several towns. Raleigh operates one landfill and plans to open one <br /> more during the study period. Cary, Wake Forest and Hillsborough each operate <br /> landfills. Wake Forest plans to shift to the new Wake County landfill on Durant <br /> Road as soon as it is ready. Orange County, Chapel Hill and Carrboro jointly <br /> own the Joint Orange Regional Landfill as well as additional land for expansion. <br /> This joint county/municipal venture is operated by Chapel Hill and serves all of <br /> Orange County. <br /> Planned capital expenditures for new or expanded landfills are: <br /> Wake County 0.1 <br /> Raleigh 0.40 <br /> Total $3.5 million <br /> Note: Some use is made of private landfills. <br /> PUBLIC CONTAINERS: <br /> Wake and Orange counties as well as the Town of Cary operate a system of <br /> public containers.
