3
TABLE 1
CURRENT AND PROJECTED JPA POPULATION
AREA 1979 2000 NUMERIC PERCENT
ESTIMATED PROJECTED INCREASE INCREASE
POPULATION POPULATION
N.CHAPEL HILL 4,993 ' 12,147 7,154 143%
UNIVERSITY LAKE 3,643 18,412 14,769 405%
S. TRIANGLE 746 3,771 3,025 405%
TOTAL 9,382 34,330 24,948 266
Land Use
The major current, and projected, demand for land in the
JPA is for residential purposes. Assuming that residential
development in the JPA is currently at R-1 densities (1 dwell- .
ing unit per acre with on-site water and sewer) with 2.72
persons per household, and that future development will occur
at this level results in a figure of 3,449 current residential
acres6 and a figure of 12,621 total acres for the year 2000.
While residential development is expected to be the dominant
land use in the JPA, commercial and service uses will occur
too. The adopted Orange County Land Use Plan uses 5% of
residential acreage to account for these uses. Table 2 gives
a generalized overview of current and projected demands for
land in the JPA.
6 Computations currently underway on recently collected'
land use data will provide more accurate figures.
